Once Levi declared that he poisoned me, I refused to waste time on sitting and waiting for some miracle. He brought clothes for me – good thing that Petra’s size was the same: the jeans and that brown shirt fit me -  , and I dressed up quickly. Levi led me out of the house and pushed me inside a simple, plain-looking black car, to the passenger seat. He walked to the other side of the vehicle and got into as well.

So there really was a car. Good to know, I noted mentally. Also, it seemed he hadn’t lied to me: I couldn’t see any house or sign of other people living nearby. There were only endless fields of grass. It even surprised me that there was a decend road for cars. I tried to, but I couldn’t figure out where I was. I have never been here. Otherwise it was a pretty nice view, probably I would have liked it if I hadn’t been taken here by force.

Levi’s – or whosesoever it was – house was a rather small, but definitely a lovely little one. The walls of the building were light blue; well, somehow I had the feeling that it wasn’t Levi who chose that colour.

”Hurry up, for god’s sake.” I murmured.

He  looked straight forward, but his lips curled into a small smirk.

”Then fasten your seatbelts.” Levi said, and he himself did the same.

I sighed and obeyed. I was going to do it anyway.

Levi placed his foot on the pedal, then turned on the engine.

”Aren’t you afraid that I might recognise where I am?” I asked as I raised an eyebrow smugly.

”So what? You still wouldn’t be able to escape.”

”But after you return me to my father, I’ll tell him everything.” I stated, observing his profile. Maybe it would be wiser to save this information for myself, but he already knows it, right? I knew he was smart.

He stayed silent for a few seconds, but not because of what I said. I think he was wondering if he should answer me or not.

”Do you really think we would stay in this country after this whole fucking comedy?” He murmured finally, starting to drive the car smoothly.

I closed my mouth. Right, that’s probably the most sensible thing to do: leave and never come back.

I tilted my head backwards until I felt the soft touch of the headrest. Levi and I didn’t talk anymore during the way to the hospital. I decided to spend my time on observing the road in case I notice something that will be useful later.

”You could have driven slowlier, you know.” I grumbled sourly, clutching my stomach.

We arrived at the hospital, and Levi already parked his car without any problem. He didn’t respond immediately, just glanced at me smugly, then got out of the car and opened the vehicle door for me. I glared at him. Is he trying to act like a damned gentleman?

”Need some help with walking?”

I snorted and got out as well. He closed the door and locked the car. I grit my teeth at the fact that my legs were shaking. I bet he even enjoys my reaction!

”Anyway, you told me to hurry up.” he said casually, then took my hand.

Took my hand.

”What are you doing?!” I hissed and tried to snatch away my already sweaty palm, but he was holding it firmly.

”Shut up. You’re my girlfriend now.”

My blood froze.

”I’m your what?” I stared at him while I could already feel my cheeks becoming pink. God, how I wanted to pour some cold water onto my head to prevent me from this constant ridiculous blushing.

”My girlfriend. I can’t just bring anyone here.” Levi said, his face not changing a bit; not letting me see even a single glimpse of emotion.

”But girlfriend? Can’t I be just your friend?” I muttered, not looking at him in the eye.

”Why would I take here a female friend of mine that my mother has never heard of? You’re my girlfriend now, that makes more sense. End of story.” Levi elegantly put an end to the argument.

I rolled my eyes, but didn’t resist anymore. I let him lead me to the enormous, old-looking hospital.

Well, his palm and fingers are cold… but it doesn’t feel uncomfortable – I thought. The only thing that concerned me was… what if I squeeze his hand accidentally?! What will he think?! Should I just hold it… limply? Jeez, why is it so hard to walk hand in hand with him?!

He stopped a few metres away from the entrance.

”I’ll smoke a cigarette.” He stated and pulled out the little box from his pocket.

I shrugged, secretly a bit relieved that he let go of my hand and rid me from my weird embarrassment.

”I strongly recommend not causing any trouble.” He remarked with a stick of cigarette already between his thin, pale lips.

”I won’t…” I mumbled, then narrowed my eyes and glared daggers at him. ”…Darling.”

”Alright then, brat.” he answered neutrally, not being touched by his new nickname.

I was just about to gasp and demand why he didn’t returned my sweet and kind gesture – well, in a funny way – but suddenly the entrance door was thrown open, and a rather elderly man wearing white pyjama stormed out in a quick pace.

”I don’t want to be here anymore!” The man shrieked, his voice sending a shiver down my spine. Soon enough a dozen of nurses and doctors came after him, rushing madly.

”We better go a metre or two away.” Levi noted calmly while he was smoking his cigarette lazily.

Just after he finished his sentence, I saw that the man had a small pocket knife in his hand. I furrowed my eyebrows and took a step backwards.

”This hospital is cursed, I-I’m telling you!” He squealed, backing down constantly towards Levi and me.

”You two, get away from him! He’s an escaping, hallucinating patient! He might be dangerous!” A doctor yelled.

The man hadn’t noticed us before, but now quickly spun around to face us. I winced as he was gazing directly at me. I felt like my heart stopped when he held out his hand with the knife.

”You came to save me…” He whispered in a terrifying tone, starting to approach me.

No voice came when I opened my mouth. I just shook my head. My breath hitched in my throat, and I was unable to move my legs and run away as far as I could. My eyes widened in utter fear. I couldn’t even tremble.

”For fuck’s sake, I just wanted to smoke one damned cigarette!” I heard Levi’s irritated voice behind me. ”And you, why are you just standing here like a freaking moron? Move already! Can’t you see that old man is mentally fucked?”

Finally I was able to break the eye contact with the creepy man and looked back at Levi pleadingly. He growled reluctantly, then took a last puff of his cigarette and let it fall to the ground. He stomped it out, not hurriedly at all while he was exhaling the smoke.

”Get away from him, for god’s sake!” A nurse called.

”L-Levi, she’s right…” I mumbled, clinging onto his arm. I looked at the male again, who was merely staring at us with his knife still aiming at me.

”How can they let a patient do this in the first place?” Levi scowled, looking at the nurses and doctors. Then he just sighed. ”Alright, move your ass, [First name].”

He grabbed my arm and pulled me behind his back.

”Levi!” I instinctively wanted to remove him from that man’s presence, but he already released himself from my grip.

”It’s time to go back, am I right?” Levi mumbled, walking towards the crazed patient. ”So aren’t you going to drop that knife?”

I saw a flash of madness crossing the man’s eyes, and I lunged forward to shove Levi away from the danger. But I wasn’t fast enough, the insane male had already moved to attack Levi. I couldn’t help but shut my eyes, not bearing to look at the result of the bloody act.

”I ask again; aren’t you?”

What? I opened my eyes just a bit.

Levi was still standing where he had been a second ago. The only difference was that he raised his right arm. The man’s face was shocked, his eyes widened for some reason.

The nurses and doctors were already coming running to us.

All surprised, I stepped closer to Levi to see what had happened.

My face went pale at the sight. The old patient was still holding the knife: and so was Levi. It was only that he was grabbing the blade. His blood was pouring onto their hands, dropping onto the ground. His eyes pierced the astonished male’s.

”Is this how you thank the nurses for wiping your ass daily, old man? Now let go of this knife once you don’t even know how to play with it.”

My jaw dropped when the stunned man obeyed without a word.

”Oh my god!” An arriving nurse whined when Levi handed the knife over to her.

”Uh well… thank you.” A doctor muttered, not knowing how to act exactly, then he and a nurse grabbed the patient’s arms to lead him back to the hospital. He didn’t protested, didn’t say a word, he was just spacing out blankly, letting himself be guided back.

”Thank you for your bravery very much, young man! Can you show me your hand?” A brown-haired female doctor asked, smiling at Levi with admiration and sympathy.

”It’s nothing, but the filth does bother me so could you give me a tissue or something?”

”Well, I’m afraid it is something. I’m pretty sure it has to be stitched.” The woman said. ”It has to be taken care of, so come, you and your… girlfriend? So you two just follow me. By the way, sweetheart, are you allright? You seem to be more frightened than him!” She joked.

I was just standing there speechless. Why couldn’t I be the one to do something useful? Why was I paralyzed? I should have just grabbed Levi’s arm and drag him away from the man. Or, knowing my own temper, I could have defend myself and Levi too. But I didn’t do anything, I was just looking up at Levi desperately like a helpless little girl.

He was the one to act.

”I…” I started, my heart clenching.

”You don’t need to worry, love. I’m here.” Levi muttered, bringing me closer to him by my waist. My eyes widened as my face was forced to be buried in his shoulder. How can he continue playing the role of my boyfriend and act so naturally?

Although I felt his hand cold before, his body seemed to be warm, soothingly warm. I felt each breath he took: inhaling slowly, exhaling slowly. As if he wanted to slow down my own breathing too. He was holding me tightly, almost as though he was reassuring me that I would be save in his arms.

And truthfully, that was how I felt. I felt safe. I closed my eyes and grasped onto his previously well-ironed, white shirt. He held me ever stronger.

”Ahem.” The doctor cleared her throat in her embarrassment. Levi let go of me and I quickly pulled away.

”I-I’m all right.” I mumbled, scratching my neck.

”You shouldn’t touch anything, your palm might get infected!” She warned. Just a bit, a narrowed my eyes at her. Just a bit.

”I was careful.” Levi said flatly, then took my hand in his uninjured one. It was as cool as I remembered it to be.

”D-do I really have to do this?” I whimpered in front of the door of Levi’s mother’s patient room. He was already nervous because an innocent doctor, who knew Levi for he was a regular visitor, simply revealed his last name – Oh Levi, so you came to see Mrs Ackerman again? – , and now didn’t seem to accept my protest.

”Yes, you’re going in to my mother. Don’t worry, she’s ridiculously talkative. And don’t you dare say anything suspicious to her.” He glanced at me nonchalantly, but this cold look was thousand times more dangerous than an angry threat.

”Something like ’Oh dear mother-in-law candidate, nice to meet you, how about you tell your beloved son not to put drugs in girls’ drink?’ ?” I snorted.

”Stop screwing around.” Levi said with straight face.

”But you better hurry up!” I huffed.

”My palm will be done quickly, but then I’ll have to talk to a doctor.”

”Doctor? That’s why you had to come here?” I asked, not knowing what kind of emotion to show. Suspicion? Pity? Simply curiousity?

”You don’t need to know. See you.”

With this, he turned his backed to me and walked away naturally.

I sighed and looked at the door, which looked like the entrance of hell to me. Meeting Levi’s mother. He said she was talkative. Meaning: she’s not like Levi at all. I gulped. Why am I so nervous?

Alright, it will be nothing. What’s the worst thing that can happen? That she won’t like me? So what?

Levi Ackerman. I smirked lightly. So his name is Levi Ackerman. And he plans to go abroad after he gets the money. I won’t forget any information.

I shook my head. I’ll think about it later. For now, I’ll deal with his mother. I reached out and opened the door.

Luckily there was only one woman in the small room – I wouldn’t have known what to do if there had been more.

So she – Mrs Ackerman – was lying in her bed, next to a large window. The room was like in any other not so modern hospital: the walls, the uncomfortable-looking bed and basically everything was white and sterile. I inhaled the typical smell of disinfectant.

She was sleeping, and I felt a sudden wave of relief in my body. Neverteless, I took a step towards her silently to be able to take a look at her face.

I’ve never seen a face this beautiful – but also visibly, grotesquely and horribly debilitated at the same time. I felt like a hand grabbed my heart to squeeze it mercilessly.

Similar to when the most beautiful women get old. Time doesn’t spare anyone. You take a look at the gorgeous actress who died yesterday, you read she was ninety-something; you can see a photo weeks before her death, how wrinkled her whole face was, how exhausted she looked, how her grey hair is little and lusterless. But if you look closely, you can see that her smile hasn’t changed a bit and the look in her still beautiful eyes is the same.

Just like that, I could see clearly that although this woman wasn’t old but ill and she looked terrible because of this, she was… - or used to be? – stunning.

She had long, black hair, which once could be definitely silky, soft and bouncy, but now it looked greasy and a bit messy. Her face wasn’t only pale: it had the colour of cold ashes. On her otherwise good shaped head her cheeks were awfully sunken, her face gaunt and bony; but her nose and lips looked perfect despite how the illness destroyed her body. From the glance that I took at her frame which was under the blankets, she seemed to be small, fragile and unbelievably skinny. I estimated her to be about fifty years old, trying to ignore her bad state.

How did I know that she must had been a real beauty? Because her appearance was just the same as Levi’s. It was only that she was a woman with softer features and she was… noticeably dying. Nobody told me what her illness was, but I was sure it was something serious. Even I could notice it seeing her for the first time.

The unexplainable bad feeling in my chest was expanding.

She frowned slightly and I gasped from her unexpected movement.

A pair of light blue eyes gazed at me.

”Oh, I’m sorry, I must have slept in.” Mrs Ackerman said in a tired voice, a bit hoarsely. She sat up in her bed and blinked at me. ”Excuse me, I don’t seem to remember you…”

All of a sudden, I felt like I got my voice back.

”Uhm n-no, we haven’t met before.” I took a deep breath. ”Well… I… My name is [First name] Smith, and…” Why is it so hard to say? ”I’m Levi’s girlfriend, Mrs Ackerman. W-we came to visit you, but h-he injured his hand.”

Her eyes lit up in a second and a huge smile took place on her face.

”Oh my god, I’m so happy to meet you! I’m Leanne Ackerman!” She introduced herself warmly. I could hardly believe, but her pale face seemed to gain a little pink colour. Is she acting? Is she pretending to be carefree and cheerful? How…?

”Nice to meet you, Mrs Ackerman.” I forced a smile on my face.

”Please, just call me Leanne. [First name], right? Let me see you, come a little closer!”

A little hesitantly, I stepped closer to her. She ran her eyes up and down me with the same smile on her lips.

”Darling, you’re beautiful! [H/c] locks, [e/c] eyes, this lovely look on your face – I can’t believe you could fall for my Levi!” she chuckled lightly. ”Well, he indeed is a handsome and smart guy, but he has some problems with his manners. But I guess it attracts girls nowadays, doesn’t it?”

I managed to nod.

”Mind if I don’t stand up? I’m a little weak at the moment. But please have a seat next to me, [First name]! Don’t just stand.” She pointed at the chair next to her bed.

I walked over to her and sat down. I was about to say something nice too – but she was quicker.

”Really, my memory is not the same. I don’t remember Levi mentioning you, but he must have told me something about you. But I’m very glad you’re with him, sweetheart. I can see that you’re a strong and honest girl. Exactly who he needs.”

I calmed down a bit, knowing that I didn’t have to make up anything. She just thinks she forgot about me, but in fact Levi had never said a word about ’his girlfriend’ of course.

”It’s okay. I’ll discipline him.” I joked, but a moment later I already regretted it. I wanted to slap myself and maybe jump out of the window to be sure I get what I deserve, but I did’t do anything, just gasped a bit at my own stupidness.

But Leanne laughed.

”Very well! I’ve never managed to, but let’s hope you’ll be more successful.” She winked at me. ”By the way, what did you say about him? He injured his hand?”

I summed up what happened to us in front of the hospital.

Leanne shook her head while scowling and laughing at the same time.

”Always so reckless! Well, I’d love to say that hopefully he learnt the lesson but I’m sure he didn’t. That’s just a scratch for him, I’m not surprised that he didn’t even wanted it to be stitched. But that’s my son.”

”Well, I think that crazy patient got seriously depressed after Levi scolded him.” I grinned, then continued in a lower dull voice, imitating him: ” ’So aren’t you going to drop that knife? Aren’t you? Is this how you thank the nurses for wiping your ass every day, old man?’

We both laughed freely, from the bottom of our hearts.

”[First name], I have to tell you that I liked his previous girlfriend Petra very much and I thought he made a huge mistake when he let her go… but now, you… you really are something else.” Leanne smiled at me softly, as if she had already considered me as her daughter-in-law. ”I think you know Levi very well, and I’m happy to see that you accept him as he is. I bet he doesn’t even know how lucky he is.”

I went silent. If she only knew…

”Levi is very hard to deal with. But you must have figured it out that… he’s the most fantastic human being. Well, I might be exaggerating…” She laughed once again. ”, but he’s a perfect son. I mean… just look at him. Visiting his mother every god damned week, when he already knows I’m dead…” Her voice became weaker and lower. ”But he just keeps insisting that there is a way for me to recover…”

It was weird to hear such things about him. Even if it was about his ill mother, I could have never imagined him being gentle and caring.

”Lung cancer.” She whispered, almost to herself. It was terrifying how suddenly she changed the topic, and I shuddered. Lung cancer… pretty bad…how unfair is that? She’s such a nice woman…

”I… I’m sorry…” I stuttered sorrowfully. ”He never told me…”

”Ah, don’t be sorry dear. But well, that’s strange… I was sure that Levi would save money to such a crazy extend that everyone would notice it. You know, doctors said that there was a surgery… It doesn’t grant that I won’t die though… but according to them, my chances of survival would increase. To be honest, I’m not sure… plus, as I have already said, it's awfully expensive. Noone can make that much money in such a short time... I told Levi I didn’t want this… but you know how stubborn he is: he said-”

”Afternoon.” Levi interrupted, opening the door and coming in. Leanne’s face became all blissful, while my face turned pale.

The kidnapping. Leanne. Levi’s reaction to mentioning his mother. This strange, sudden visit in the hospital… Petra’s mysterious words…

”But, even though it might sound crazy, you’re safe here. We won’t hurt you, okay? It’s just…it’s about the money.”

”Why do you need the money? What's worth the risk?”

”But why are you helping him with…this? Did he force you?”

”No, not at all, he didn’t even want me to get into this. It’s because his…”

… mother is dying.

”[First name]?” Levi raised an eyebrow at me, saying my name a bit sharper than a loving boyfriend would.

”It’s nothing.” I quickly shook my head, but I still felt a bit dizzy from the realization.

”Levi, [First name] is simply enchanting! God, you make a perfect couple!” Leanne said enthusiastically.

”Yeah. Now how are you?”

”I’m fine, I’m fine.” she answered quickly, though it was obvious that she wasn’t. ”Is your palm okay?”

Levi looked at me in the most awful way: his face remained the same, but I knew, oh how I knew that he sent me a silent message, which could be something like ‘why the fuck did you tell her?’.

”It is.” he answered dryly. ”Listen, I’m sorry, but we’re going home. I’ve talked to the doctor, he said you could be operated on next week.”

For the first time, the delightful little woman’s eyes widened in fear.

”N-no! I don’t want it, I told you I didn’t-“

”I’m not going to argue. I’ll call you, alright?” Levi mumbled and walked to Leanne to press his lips on her forehead.

The skinny female clearly trembled. I couldn’t help but feel sorry for her, but at the same time I admired Levi as well.

”C-call me… soon.” Leanne stuttered as he stroked his arm, and I noticed that her eyes became teary.

”Let’s go, [First name].”

”Wait, let me say goodbye to her too.” She smiled at me with her shaky lips. My heart sank, but I moved my legs and leaned closer to her.

”I’m happy that I could meet y-“

“Please take care of him.” Leanne cut me off quietly, bringing her slender, thin fingers to my face to caress it.

Wordless, I nodded.

I didn’t know what to say to Levi once we got into his car. We were already on our way, he was driving silently.

Won’t he ask anything? Isn’t he curious? Of course he is. He must be. I’m sure we had to go because he didn’t want me to hear anything essential. Too bad I did.

Levi kidnapped me because he needed money to save his mother, I was almost a hundred percent sure. And that didn’t make it easier for me, it was the opposite: how was I supposed to even attempt to escape once… all his sin was that he didn’t want Leanne to die?

I wanted to say something about this to him, but I was afraid of his answer.

He would never admit that, I’m sure he consideres this as a weakness. Otherwise he would have told me his reason, right?

If only I could help him. If only I could say ’Listen, let me go, I’ll still give you that money. I can see that you’re a good person and Leanne deserves it.’. But he would never accept that money. He would never trust me.

I glanced at him secretly. Levi… I like him. I like him. Right from the first second. I even hid this fact from myself, but I don’t have to anymore. He wasn’t a criminal, he wasn’t the bad guy in this story.

Because there were no bad guys in this story.

Levi just kept on driving, not saying a single word.

As we returned to the house, a godawful feeling hit me. I totally forgot about the fact that I was freaking drugged by Levi.

No bad guys, huh?

”L-Levi, what time is it?” I muttered, and I swear I already started to feel a throbbing pain in my stomach. It has begun to work…

”I don’t know.” he said with no interest at all. Can it be that he forgot it?! But then he glanced at his watch. ”It’s almost 7 PM. Why are you asking?”

My vision became blurred.

”I…” I was already sweating. I’m… dazed… and a bit nauseous…

”Spit it out, for fuck’s sake.”

”It was… half past three when we left…” I whimpered, almost choking the words. ”Meaning… I have only half an hour left… Levi, g-give me the antidote!” My legs started to shake too. At this rate I’m going to die for real…

”Oh.” He paused. ”Could you pour yourself a glass of water then? I’ll smoke a cigarette.”

My throat went dry.

”A.. glass of water? L-L-Levi, I don’t know if you can… realise that I’m going to…”

Unexpectedly, a faint but clearly smug smirk crossed his features.

”Why, are you feeling bad already?”

”Y-yes! That’s what I’m trying to.. say!” I managed to stutter. God, I didn’t even have the energy to be rude and harsh anymore.

”I’ve told you, just bring a glass of water.”

Jeez. Fucking asshole! I wasn’t even sure if I could walk.

Well, somehow I still made my way to the kitchen, grabbed a glass and filled it with water. Maybe he went for the antidote and sent me to the kitchen so as not to see where the pills and tablets are.

But when I came back to him, he was exactly in the same position, smoking his damn cigarette.

”W-what now?” I asked, my heart racing in my chest.

”Drink it.”

”What?!”

”Just do it.”

I was on the edge of crying, but I did what he said nevertheless. When I finished it, I felt like throwing it up.

”Better?”

”How the f-fuck could have a f…fucking glass of water made me feel b-better?!” I burst out, tears already running down my face in my helpless and desperate anger.

”Well, I thought it should have been enough to say to a hypochondriac like you.”

My blood froze, and all of a sudden everything that I had been feeling – the dizziness, the nausea, the pain in my insides – disappeared miraculously. I gasped. Even my legs stopped shaking.

You…”

”Oh, you aren’t stuttering anymore?”

You didn’t put anything in my drink.” I stared at him in disbelief.

”No, I didn’t indeed. A ‘special, lethal drug’… really [First name], that was ridiculous. How the fuck could I get something like that.” He deadpanned.

My face turned into an ugly grimace, opening my mouth and forming silent words, but in the end I just couldn’t think of anything offensive enough.

”To return this pleasant surprise, you should let me cook a nice dinner for you. I bet you would equally enjoy it.” I glared at him.

”I have no doubt about it.” He muttered as he blew out the gray smoke.
